QGIS Workshop: Data Visualisation Tools for Linguists
1, 2 April 2026 Dr. Matthew Sung
About the Event
The QGIS workshops provided by Dr. Matthew Sung (Leiden University) aim to introduce both basic and advanced mapping techniques specifically aimed or linguists. The map types include a range of qualitative and quantitative maps, such as point maps, frequency maps, area maps and isogloss maps.
Abstract
Maps are an important visualisation tool for linguists. However, most linguists are not trained in mapping and thus not able to design professional maps. QGIS is opensource mapping software that enables its users to plot features, create data points, or redraw existing maps. For researchers that work with language variation, software like QGIS is vital in providing reliable maps as visualisation tools for further analyses.
